Web Graphics/GUI Designer  

Contract

We are looking for a web-based UI designer/architect who provides expertise and leadership in the development and maintenance of new and existing web-based data query and presentation applications and materials on a website. The candidate will be responsible for creating and maintaining the overall user interface look-and-feel, developing server- and client-side Scripting as well as coordinating coding and site development activities with Back End application developers, writing and disseminating site style standards and guides, and other activities appropriate to a technical leadership role in a team development environment.

Candidates must have strong, demonstrated capabilities and skills in usability assessment and design, information organization, data presentation, and application integration as well as general site design, layout, styling, and other web best practices (particularly for websites intended to publish large and diverse datasets in multiple formats, and for highly varied audiences and purposes).
The position requires that the candidate work directly with clients (both content owners and enterprise website managers), other web application developer/programmers, and other website content management contractors to ensure that best practices are used to publish diverse data and materials on the Datawarehouse web site. The site must operate within defined web standards including Section 508. The candidate must be able to make best-practices arguments in support of particular design philosophies and implementation approaches.

Candidates should also have demonstrated experience compiling information architecture and style guide documentation for website development, and taking technical leadership responsibility for the work of a team of web and application developers.

REQUIRED SKILLS/DUTIES:
Designs, organizes, formats, manages web content and associated files that make data available to end users in a variety of ways (eg downloadable, machine-readable, summarized, dashboarded, queryable, in formatted reports and raw tables, etc.) using C#.NET, PHP, ASP Classic, HTML/CSS/Javascript, familiarity with jQuery, Moo Tools, HTML5, AJAX, JavaScript, Adobe Photoshop (CS2+), Adobe Dreamweaver (CS2+), Adobe Acrobat Professional 8+, Visual Studio 2005/2010, PVCS Tracker, Subversion (SVN), Xcode 4, Microsoft Office (Word/Excel/Access/Powerpoint/Outlook) etc.. Website content and applications must be usable by multiple browsers including Internet Explorer 6.0 and later, FireFox, Safari, Chrome, and others. Experience with iOS devices (iPhone, iPad), Android devices, Blackberry devices, Apple Computers, Windows XP, Mac OS X 10.6+, Twitter, Facebook, Uservoice, Socrata, TypePad, Wordpress, Blogger.com, Google Documents, Google analytics, Webtrends, Percussion, Drupal, and Joomla.

Documentation including white papers, style guides, technical documentation, ability to give presentations to clients. Familiarity with new and emerging technologies, both hardware (gadgets), and software (tools/websites/etc). Must have a portfolio of graphic designs & working websites PERSONALLY designed and maintained. Experience as a full time Web Master for more than 6 months would be nice to have. Ability to conceptualize new UIs for websites and web-based apps, from wireframe to completion. Must have some idea of what RUP/AGILE/CMMI are and how they should be integrated into the process. Graphic design skills, both in photo manipulation and original graphic creation are a requirement. Section 508 experience. Usability testing & information architecture experience are a must and should be demonstrated. Methodology should be proven through examples of standard techniques such as card sorting, personas, paper prototypes, benchmarking, other heuristics.

Incorporates best practices web labeling techniques, general web conventions, and proper chunking of information (eg, Information Mapping techniques) to ensure all web pages are highly readable (ie, information is quicker to read/scan and easier to find) and extremely quick to load while also remaining fully compliant with Section 508 accessibility requirements.

Collaborates with graphics developer to create custom banner graphics, web buttons, widget interfaces, and other design elements used throughout the site.

Collaborates with requirements analysts, database report developers, and ASP .NET application developers to develop reusable ASP .NET application master pages, and to integrate dynamic content from multiple data reporting and presentation platforms including SQL Server Reporting Services, Corda CenterView, and ArcGIS. Also coordinates activities with the customers other web content development and management contractors (using the Percussion content management system) to integrate the Datawarehouse tools and applications into the overall enterprise web architecture.

Assists in the development of procedures, policies, and guidelines that will accommodate the addition of new materials, information, and resources on the web site and sub-sites, including content tip sheets for use by sub-site developers and content providers when producing frequently used documents such as question-and-answer documents, fact sheets, DOS and donts in web design for the web site, following Section 508 rules, using in-house and purchased applications, etc.

Represents the Datawarehouse project within the customers larger enterprise web governance body and ensures that contemplated changes to the enterprise web architecture take into account the probable interplay with and impact on the Datawarehouse applications.

DESIRED SKILLS/DUTIES:

  • Experience in educating content providers in proper web writing techniques, software application use, maintenance of web files, etc.
  • Lead role in design and administration of usability tests for web pages.
  • Testing of pages thoroughly in at least two browsers (ie, FireFox and Internet Explorer) and follows all mandatory internal approval and clearance processes before posting pages.

EDUCATION:
Bachelors degree and 5+ years related work experience.
