Job Description

FUNCTION:
Lead the Electronics Engineering team in the development of integrated electronics for new products in rail transportation braking and control applications, meeting goals of cost, quality, delivery, reliability, safety, and service. This includes hardware developed in-house as well as hardware developed through external development partners, with strategic focus on highly-robust, integrated "mechatronics" solutions. The position is also responsible for management of Sustaining Engineering of existing products, including component obsolescence and manufacturing process support. Manage the assigned resources to achieve development objectives and schedules; team identity and focus, appropriate levels of responsibility sharing, and personnel development.

This is a "working manager" position, including Sr. Engineering elements of high-level, architectural design, specification development, reliability engineering, test planning, and problem solving, as well as the Team Leader responsibilities of planning and coordination, tasking and delegation, review, coaching and guidance, and process improvement.

Engineering is organized in a team-oriented Matrix; as a consequence the position requires strong organizational, coaching, coordinating skills to assist the multi-disciplinary project teams achieve their objectives.

JOB DUTIES

  • Lead team in design, development, documentation, implementation and test of Electronic Hardware, meeting the requirements and specifications generated during analysis phase of program development. Lead design reviews, reliability reviews, test reviews, and cost reviews, and other process elements, to assure quality hardware delivery
  • Perform project work: Develop systems and documentation. Define and communicate requirements and design specifications. Communicate with customers, suppliers, and development partners, set schedules and priorities, solve technical problems, participate in conference calls. Meet with customers and end users to gather new requirements, to review reliability status and improvement plans, to discuss new work and in support of Marketing
  • Plan, manage and review the electronic hardware development, validation, and maintenance work within the Electronics Engineering Team, assuring that all work is performed to the NYAB Development Process, including written specifications and documentation, cross functional design reviews, "Toll Gate Reviews", and up-to-date schedules
  • Develop and improve Electronics Engineering development and sustaining processes to be well defined, lean, efficient, and robust.
  • Manage personnel performance of the Electronics Engineering Team. Provide training and coaching for performance improvement. Administer company policy and procedure. Utilize the NYAB Performance Management System, by setting and tracking goals and objectives, providing timely and appropriate feedback for good and poor performance, and by timely performance of the Annual Performance Appraisal and at least a midterm preformance review with each employee. Plan and approve vacation for each employee. Plan and approve continuing education and training for each employee. Provide communication of company directives, business status/successes/issues
  • Conduct project review and resource planning with the Engineering (management) staff to keep all projects on track, to identify issues before they impact schedule, scope, or resu to monitor and schedule Toll Gate activity; to identify and address resource issues.
  • Keep abreast of advances in electronics engineering technology. Add to current knowledge base by pursuing education and training in related areas of technology for career growth and company benefit

Required Skills
Bachelor degree electrical engineering; five years job related experience; solid background in design of highly reliable digital and analog circuits and controls for severe environments; proven track-record in design of robust, cost-efficient, integrated "mechatronics" products; experience and understanding of reliability engineering in the development process; ability to lead and manage electronic development performed by off-site development partners.
